Norn Arena is way overpowered.
Its bad enough they cheat & have chants that cant be rended & spectators healing them from the sidelines.... I went thru 15 times all the way to Magni & not once did Zho even spawn. Damn if I didnt have to fight Melonni 10 times though. Why even implement a pet thats a huge pain to get & then put the key guy you need in a arena that cheats & he doesnt even spawn? The 100 gold every time you go to that arena is a joke as well...Like Im not nickled & dimed enough. I might as well set up a few bots so I can afford to play the game anymore.

The spectators heal you also. No one else seems to be finding it all that difficult. This sounds like a personal failure on your part.

I've found it hard, but during the preview event went from round 2 KO till getting to the end, still having trouble at the end mind you.
You have to keep trying different builds, as a result I have a nice engery gen / airspike build (with a nice blinding flash for melee types) I've never had before. This coming from a fire ele through and through.

If you're a necro, get him into the arena as a 55 and just slap them with SV.
I did this with my monk, enough to get myself a crown and some tokens besides to sell for a nice profit.
It's not that hard, unless you're Alesia or something.

Like hell they do. I was fighting Alesia and kept wondering why she was being healed even though I kept interrupting all her healing skills until I realized an NPC was healing her from the sidelines.
So I had to leave. Good-bye 100g.
Then I fought Kisai, who also kept getting healed, over and over and over and over again. I purposely went down to 200hp or less and was I healed?
NO.
But Kisai was continually healed even at 60% Hp left.
The arena has became pure crap.
No more norn reputation bonus after beating the 6th round, spectators that heal your enemy, and a 100g entry fee.
ArenaNet at its most thoughtless.

I think anet needs to buff player intelligence here. Seriously, this was meant to be hard. Not easy and not cast 6 spirits and lol.

As game is, players of every profession demonstrated ability to get to bison and beat him with PvP-valid skills.
If you complain about this, you should not even try polymock.

I agree. It's design is poor.
It's one of these occasions where Guild Wars becomes Build Wars and within a week, working builds will be available on Pvxwiki. Copy, Paste, win.
As for the healing spectators, it's tough enough to kill some of the opposition without a dwarf spamming Heal Other on them.
And gg to the OP for raising this and absorbing the flames. Courageous!

I pretty sure Anet put this in due to all the 1 vs 1 PvP requests.
"See why we didn't do it with live players pvp"
The oppents seem to be sudo-random and what type of class you play will have a great affect or be very difficult depending on your oppenet.
Example as an ele, I can deal with Melee so so, I can out do fire ele any day. I'm on even level with messmers. Now Dervish that strip attachment and have high attack speeds, or "heal balls" where I have trouble distrupting them.. that's a different story.
And finally Norn "bear" which I can't intrupt and airspike only pisses them off... I still have to think and adapt on that one.
End result, I'm really learning other classes strenghts and how to counter them while keeping a "generic" build that verstile enough to take on the others.
Again, adapt, I may try the spirt spam trick to be honest because it works, but will also look at my evolving air build. Also all the new faction based PvE skill may become very usefull once my ranks get high enough.

Day one of the official release of the 'high level' expansion and people are angry because they can't get what they want immediately. I got frustrated too, fighting and fighting to get to Zho, but it was worth it and I learned from the challenge.
Good luck to you boys and girls.

Well, healing spectators seem to be unfair, but that might just be overlook (designers tend to give noncombat npcs heal area/heal other for some weird reson.)
But, others should follow EternalTempests example, improve, doh, dont ask for nerfs. You are not supposed to beat it with your favourite build, nor are you expected to develop perfect build after few tries.
Sure there will be wiki builds soon, but you would get them even if it was easy.

Wow.. Amazing
It has nothing to do with builds. It has to do with an NPC needed for a quest that doesnt spawn in a bogus arena.
Where & Why some of you are posting about what build beats what is beyond me...

If that's the case, then your thread title makes no sense, even though people should read the original post.

Well I had a fun time myself trying to beat the tourney last weekend but after playing with some builds I manged to find a ranger / pet build that works quite nicely and I'm able to beat anything I go up against. It's hardly over-powered

I used spirits, painful bond, grenth's balance and random spam on my necro and Magni dropped like a sack of taters. I was afraid that a 55 SV wouldn't work and I didn't wanna waste time/gold doing it over and over again. GG me.
I hear a lot of people have been having luck with grenth's balance. You might wanna try that.
